Mentoring Expectant and Parenting Youth in Foster Care: Lessons from the Field

In this webinar, Barbara Oleachea, Program Planner with Sacramento County, California’s Child Protective Services and Brenda Dabney, Director at the Children’s Law Center of Sacramento, CA, present on their unique approach to ensuring that every expectant and parenting youth is connected to a mentor. Their approach includes collaborative partnerships that create a shared system for recruitment, capacity building, tracking impact and continuous quality improvement. They will discuss implementation efforts, challenges and lessons learned. Additionally, a young parent from Sacramento County shared her mentoring experience and offered her insight on what is working well, challenges yet to be overcome and recommendations.


Creating Opportunities for Expectant and Parenting Youth: A Co-Parenting Approach

EPY welcomed Dr. Paul Florsheim, Professor and Clinical Psychologist at the Zilber School of Public Health at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who presented findings from the Young Parenthood Project designed to test the efficacy of a co-parenting counseling program for parenting and expecting adolescents.  He discussed implementation efforts, challenges and implications for those considering this approach to supporting expectant and parenting youth and their children.  Additionally, two young parents who have spent time in the foster care system shared their experience co-parenting and offer their insights on what is working well, challenges and recommendations.


Expectant & Parenting Youth in Foster Care Learning Collective Inaugural Webinar

On our first webinar held on April 2, 2015, professionals from around the country joined us to discuss implications of Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standards under the Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act (H.R.4980) for expectant and parenting youth and their children in foster care, hear our vision for the learning collective, take a virtual tour of our website and meet our two grantees in New York City, NY and Sacramento County, CA.
