Project Description

Many opportunities to improve the well-being of children and families are missed due to a lack of clear strategic directions and compelling evidence for individual policies. To help seize some of these missed opportunities, the Policy Matters project translates the best available research and practice evidence into policy benchmarks or "goal posts" for comparing and tracking a range of state policies that strengthen American families.

The Policy Matters project focuses on six core results: school readiness; educational achievement; positive youth engagement; family economic success; healthy families; and strong family relationships. The project produces a series of reports, policy briefs, self-assessments, and comparative studies covering each of these core results.

State policymakers and administrators will find the Policy Matters products to be a useful resource for making better-informed policy choices. State-level advocates and practitioners will find the Policy Matters products helpful in building consensus for future policy goals and educating constituencies. Researchers and policy analysts will find the Policy Matters materials provide a useful framework for conducting further research and analysis of state policies

Forthcoming Publications and Tools

Policy Matters: Tracking State Supports to Children and Families (Fall 2005)
This report is the first in a series of 50-state reports establishing research-based policy recommendations and benchmarks against which to track existing state policies. The report examines the adequacy of state-level efforts to support families and children by comparing existing state policies to family needs in the states, recommended levels of funding, and actual enrollment of eligible children and families. Both a summary of individual state performance and multi-state comparisons are included.
