Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

The mission of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is to improve the quality of people's lives by nurturing the arts, protecting and restoring the environment, seeking cures for diseases, and helping to protect children from abuse and neglect. The Child Abuse Prevention Program seeks to protect children from abuse and neglect in order to promote their healthy development. It was established in September 2000 and currently pursues its mission through three strategies:

  • Early intervention – development, expansion or improvement of services designed to prevent child abuse and neglect
  • Primary prevention – public education efforts to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect and its prevention
  • Applied research – data collection and analysis efforts that increase the information base on child abuse and neglect prevention and help to measure the effectiveness of prevention efforts
The program's primary objective is to integrate child abuse prevention strategies into settings that serve large numbers of young children and their families. This work is under the direction of Betsy Fader and Francie Zimmerman.
