The Tom Joe Public Policy Fellows Program

The Tom Joe Public Policy Fellowship was created in 2001 to honor the memory of CSSP's founding director, Tom Joe, who dedicated his life to developing, promoting and leading efforts for better and innovative public policies for the nation's most vulnerable populations. [Further information about Tom Joe.]

What Is the Purpose of the Fellowship?

Each year, CSSP awards one or two Fellowships for work in specific policy areas. The Fellowships are designed to provide opportunities for exceptional candidates to further their knowledge about public policy and develop leadership skills that enhance their capability to guide future work in the public policy arena. Fellows have the opportunity to examine issues from different perspectives and practical experiences, including: working directly with senior staff to learn from experienced professionals; learning how policy issues are addressed at the national, state and local levels; and, observing how CSSP provides technical assistance to communities, state and local government officials.

Working in either or both the Washington, D.C. and New York City offices, Tom Joe Fellows have the opportunity to experience multi-cultural settings and potentially work in several other urban areas. Our dynamic settings allow Fellows to apply their developing knowledge and skills with diverse, vulnerable and at-risk populations and with support systems of varying sizes and types.

The application deadline for 2005-2006 has passed, so we are not currently accepting any other applications. Look for information about the 2006-2007 TJ Fellowship this fall.
