POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Associate for Peer Technical Assistance and National Technical
Assistance
Organization Overview
The Center for the
Study of Social Policy (CSSP), located in Washington, DC and New
York City, is a nonprofit public policy and technical assistance
(TA) organization. CSSP believes that even the toughest social
problems have solutions, and that families have a right to equal
opportunities for improved living conditions and children have a
right for an equal opportunity to secure a better future.
Job Overview:
We’re looking for a junior to mid-level person to join our
Washington, D.C.-based technical assistance (TA) team on a national
initiative to connect kids and families living in tough
neighborhoods with knowledge, tools, promising practices and
learning opportunities that will make families and neighborhoods
stronger. The future direction of this work includes helping local
organizations to develop the capacity to manage and sustain the
initiative’s focus and to help neighborhood residents continue
playing leading roles. If you are selected for our team, you will
have the opportunity to assist in the delivery of technical
assistance in developing neighborhood-based approaches to improve
results for those living in difficult surroundings and
circumstances; assist with our work with policymakers and
practitioners, public officials and other key constituencies, and
colleagues across the country to solve problems; develop and
implement new strategies; research, analyze and catalogue best
practices; develop and write proposals, reports and help draft
published work; and participate in conferences, and state and
national meetings. You also will have an opportunity to work on
other CSSP initiatives and projects.
What Does It Take To Work Here?
We seek someone who has a commitment to our values and
principles; is results-oriented, and has good organizational
ability; and can work collaboratively to assist our TA team in
conceptual, quantitative and analytical work; problem solving;
collecting, analyzing and using data; and in supporting our Peer
TAefforts (which bring together colleagues from around the country
who, together, identify new strategies to solve problems). We seek
someone who communicates well both in written and oral form; and, of
course, someone with strong interpersonal skills. You should have a
good understanding of what technical assistance is, how to provide
it well, and possess knowledge of how to train others to use it. You
also need to have knowledge of public policy and systems reform
efforts (community development, human services, education, early
care and education, work and income support, youth development, and
family support) and be able to conceptualize and design.
You will have the opportunity to travel across the country supporting
our senior team working with many national foundations, and residents
and neighborhood leaders of all nationalities and cultures. In a perfect
world, you will have a master degree in social science or a related
field and have demonstrated and relevant experience working in
communities and neighborhoods in this type of work.
Other?
Our organization is committed to eradicating racism where it
exists, and in this work, you will need to be able to address racial
disparities and other inequities that you encounter. You also will
need to join in our internal capacity-building work around
structural racism and other race issues.
What Do You Get in Return?
You’ll have the opportunity to make a difference, and you will be
joining some of the nation’s best thinkers and TA providers. The
work is hard but rewarding. You will receive a competitive salary
that is commensurate with your experience. We believe in pay for
performance and in providing a very generous benefits package,
including health care insurance, pension plan, and parking or public
transit subsidies, among other benefits. We provide generous
vacation, sick, and holiday leave. We also provide personal or
floating days to be used at your discretion, time to participate in
your children’s school activities. Flexible work schedules can be
arranged under certain circumstances.
What Else?
We provide you with new tech equipment and pleasing work
surroundings (although you need to be flexible). We are a good group
that enjoys working together to generate the best ideas and products
around, so bring a strong sense of intellectual curiosity.
